WHAT IS COGNITIVE PROCESSING THERAPY?
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) was developed and tested with individuals presenting with a wide range of comorbid disorders and complicated trauma histories. It is an adaptation of the evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) used to help people explore recovery from the impact of Trauma exposure. CPT has been approved by the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies.
CPT involves a structured approach to address the unique needs of individuals living with PTSD and/or Depression. Specifically, CPT may work in as few as 12 treatment sessions. Treatment may be provided for longer periods depending on each individual’s needs.
Sessions consist of:
- Education on PTSD symptoms
- Exploration of the traumatic events and life afterward
- Connections between trauma-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Experiencing the emotions associated with the Traumatic events
- Challenging maladaptive thoughts about the trauma
- Increasing understanding of unhelpful thinking patterns while learning new, healthier ways of thinking
- Exploring 5 core themes have been affected by their traumatic experiences
