What Does It Mean to Be Trauma-Informed?

At Broadhollow Psychotherapy, we know that healing is more than words. Trauma does not always respond to logic or conversation alone; it can show up in the body, in relationships, and in the way you move through the world. Being Trauma-informed means we honor that truth. We create safety, listen deeply, respect your pace, and treat you as a whole person, not a problem to be solved. Healing begins when you are understood, not rushed, and when change can take root in ways that feel real and lasting

HIGH ACTIVATION

If you are feeling anxious,
panicked, or on edge

Your nervous system is in a protective, high-alert state. These techniques signal safety to your body.

Physiological Sigh

Polyvagal / Respiratory Research

  1. Take a full inhale through your nose.
  2. At the top, take a second short sniff to fully expand your lungs.
  3. Release a long, slow exhale through your mouth until your lungs are empty.
  4. Repeat 1 to 3 times. Notice any shift in your body.

Extended Exhale Breathing

Polyvagal Theory

  1. Inhale for 4 counts through your nose.
  2. Hold gently for 1 to 2 counts.
  3. Exhale slowly for 6 to 8 counts through your mouth.
  4. The longer exhale activates the vagal brake and slows your heart rate.
  5. Repeat for 5 to 10 cycles.

Cold Water Reset

Somatic / Autonomic Regulation

  1. Run cold water over your wrists and inside of your forearms for 30 seconds.
  2. Alternatively, splash cold water on your face.
  3. This activates the dive reflex and slows your heart rate quickly.
  4. Follow with 3 slow breaths.

Bilateral Tapping

EMDR / Somatic

  1. Cross your arms over your chest, hands resting near your shoulders.
  2. Alternate tapping left, right, left, right at a slow, steady rhythm.
  3. Focus on your breath while tapping for 30 to 60 seconds.
  4. This bilateral stimulation supports nervous system calming.
